Because I, Too, Was Once A College StudentJul 14 '00 Write an essay on this topic. It's been a while since I graced the hallowed halls of my alma mater as a student. A few visits here and there to pick up a course catalog---for those momentary "I should go back to school" feelings---have convinced me that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Therefore, I think I can safely suggest some good additions to that care package you're going to be packing and sending to Junior come late August. (Granted, I'm not completely off my rocker---don't ask me what CDs to include. I'm sure Meatloaf, Survivor, and Journey don't cut it anymore.) Phone Cards If you want to make sure you get your weekly call from your favorite student, make sure to thrown in a pre-paid calling card. This will save you the collect call expense, and may instill just enough guilt to prompt a call from your child. Coffee Maker Assuming your student's college of choice does not ban small appliances in the dorm room, a small-sized coffee maker is a good idea. Something about going to college that brings out the coffee drinker in most people. Sure, it's the caffeine, but it also makes a gal feel "all grown up". Throw in a can of coffee (skip the decaf) and your student will love you for it. Thermal Coffee Mug Along the same lines as above, but fitting for that 8am Medieval History class. Nothing keeps a person awake in class (especially on Monday morning) better than a good hot cup of coffee. Make it a nice BIG mug too! Gift Certificates Arriving on campus, your student will soon find that he doesn't have all the "required" gear. Be it the latest book bag, college sweatshirt, or the "proper" pair of jeans. Be a sport and send along a gift certificate to either a local store, or to one of the many mail order companies who will crowd your child's dorm mailbox (i.e. J. Crew). Food, food, & more food Not the healthy variety, mind you. How about a big box of Snickers Bars, microwave popcorn, maybe some quarters for the pop machine. All the necessities of life, only sent with love from mom. Just a few ideas from a former college student. My mom always did great care packages and they were appreciated more than I let her know. And although not every student will admit it, getting a Hallmark card in the mailbox from time to time was almost as good as receiving a package---even at 18, there's something exciting about getting "real" mail. |
