Aside from the excellent education you receive at Cal Poly, you will find an excellent setting for social activities. The population of San Luis Obispo is about 40,000. If you love a small town this is the college for you. There are many activities that you can participate in, such as college clubs (Cal Poly has over 400 student run clubs), WOW week (freshman orientation), and Open House (a showcase of Cal Poly clubs and organizations).
The downtown thrives on the weekends. There are many bars and good restaurants. The downtown is home to college students on the weekends. Several movie theatres guarantee you will always see the latest releases, and or alternative films.
The small college town feel of San Luis Obispo makes it very easy to meet people. Students should seriously consider joining clubs. It is an excellent way to meet fellow students with similar interests as yours.
Other social activities include bike riding, hiking up to the "Poly P" (a concrete letter embedded in the side of the hill above campus), and using the recreational center on campus.
Lastly, I would be remiss if I did not mention the Farmer's Market on Thursday. About 1/2 mile of the main street downtown is closed to traffic and vendors set up stalls selling produce, other products and food. This event serves as an excellent break from studying.
