Alcohol use = thumbs up :) Alcohol abuse = thumbs down :(Aug 15 '00 Write an essay on this topic.I personally enjoy writing about my college experiences here on Epinions. One topic which I have avoided writing about is the dreaded topic of alcohol abuse. I fear that people will automatically NR me based on my encouragement of drinking in college. Well, bring on the NRs. Here are my thoughts on chugging beer and binge drinking. I think alcohol use is a good thing. Why? Because alcohol worked for me. I was drunk five nights a week for my entire fourth year of school. I graduated with honors, a bachelors degree, and a masters degree in five years time. I passed the CPA exam a year later. My using of alcohol in college did not deter my academic and later, professional success. I would have succeeded the same if I had not drank at all in college. As a side note, I rarely drink anymore. Temptation Alcohol played a central role in my experience at Michigan State University. I am pretty sure that it plays a major role for the majority of current students in public universities as well. From the moment you step onto campus as a fresh seventeen or eighteen year-old, there is an overwhelming desire to do some wacky things. Drinking alcohol is definitely one of them. Idiots and geniuses I knew some brilliant people in college that drank heavily. I also knew some brilliant people in college that rarely drank. The same thing goes with morons (There are some dumb students out there. Some drink, some don't). I believe that if a person has the ability to succeed in college, he or she will do it. All it takes is some effort. Drinking responsibly will not interfere with your academics. On the other hand, drinking carelessly can lead to madness... When it turns bad When your drinking starts causing problems, then your drinking is a problem. A partial list of problems follows: - Excessive (unintentional) skipping of class - That is, being too drunk to get up for your classes. - Unusually frequent confrontations with loved ones - That is, fighting with the people you know and love. - Health problems - That is, you feel horrible day after day. You drink to make it go away. The examples above are by no means exhaustive. Again, if your drinking is causing problems, you have a drinking problem. Dealing with abuse There are several places you can go for help. Your university likely has programs that cater to those to with drinking problems. Also, AA is always a viable option. Drinking Drinking worked for me. I had no problems. Your mileage may vary, so proceed with caution. If there are any signs of trouble, seek help immediately. Thanks for reading.
