Equestrian Team

Written: Jan 24 '00
Pros:individual attention, quality lessons
Cons:none

Although the Equestrian Team here at Hartwick College was only made a varsity sport during Spring Term of 1999, it is a great program. The coaches are helpful in their instruction and pay attention to each member's needs. There is not one lesson that you walks away from without the feeling that you learned something or improved on something. I came onto the team as a freshman this year and felt that the upperclassmen where very helpful in my adjustment to an intercollegiate sport. Regardless of your riding ability, you are given equal respect and care. The lessons run for an hour and prep time and cool down periods usually last a half-hour. You are usually given three lessons a week, although they are made according to your schedule. Two of these lessons are reserved to Flat work and if you are an advanced rider, one of these is for jumping skills.
The horses provided are good and they have types for all levels of riders. The facilities are good and well kept. Each team member is responsible for the tacking up and down of their horse. I feel that this is a good thing since it gives the riders a chance to get time to spend with their horses.
Overall, I highly recommend this program to all levels of riders, even those who are just starting and those who wish to start. The team is Region 2/ Zone 2
