Trinity College, Dublin Ireland

I spent the summer of 1990 at Trinity College in the most beautifully warm and unexpectedly, friendly city in the world, Dublin, Ireland.

I was a young, back-water nineteen, and fed up with school! So what was I doing spending more time in class? Having the time of my life! That's what! Anyway, who could ask for anything more? I had the rain, a rarity here in the wild beyond! I had a wonderful host family to live with, who made me feel at home right away, (just in case getting off the plane to discover that I did NOT stand out in the crowd didn't). More than anything, I had my beautiful Ireland, land of my fairies and the Red Hand of my family. Land where my Grandfather had told his poet-heart she should grow up and get to.

That land under my feet, I made my way through the damp, sweet smelling streets to that Irish scholars' Mecca, Trinity! Unlike Joyce, I do not find her a "Dull stone in the ring of the city...". I rather think of Trinity College as a gem any potentate would treasure owning. Dropped into the center of that Dark Pool, and rippling out from which is the most congenial place for one who loves the old music, the dance, the tails spun all night, the spoken and written word!

Attending Trinity is a feat no doubt! Though the class always gives way to the city and the "Crack" (conversation) that seems never to end in Dublin. Also, there are no end of tours outside the city, and any number of sights within. One could never say that they had nothing to do, or no one with whom to visit! Aside from everything else, the professors are, for the most part, warm and ready with a great whopper to tell over dinner! For an incredibly fun and intelligent time, I recommend Professors Brendan Kennelly and Terence Brown, both of the English Department! While the classes are some of the most demanding you will find anywhere, the teachers and students are quick to pull the new person up to speed, and be wonderfully helpful.

Queen Elizabeth the First commissioned the college to be built, and this has become her noblest endeavor, in terms of the Irish. The college houses an unparalleled library comprised of priceless collections and works, including the famous Book Of Kells! As with any college, there are a great variety of subjects which can be studied, though no one could attend long before becoming enamored of the literature, which flows like water here. In my opinion, there simply is no safer or more rewarding place to try your hand at college. You may decide you like to study!
Slante!
