Something No One Knows About Transferring Schools

May 04 '00

Transferring schools can be a nightmare experience, but there is also a huge undiscovered advantage to transferring schools- you are able to have your bad grades disappear. Yes, the "D" or the "F" that you received in Freshman English will be gone when you transfer. Here is how I found out about this new form of math.

First of all, I had a few friends who got into excellent schools right out of high school. They then proceeded to party like crazy. Hence, school came in behind beer, partying, girls, and more beer when priorities were set. A few of these friends did not make it through their freshman years of school- a G.P.A. of .6 will not go a long in convincing the admissions staff to ask you back.

So, these friends ended up at community college in order to again prove that they could do college level work. Both of them excelled and they began applying to excellent schools once again.

We could not figure out how they thought they would have a prayer of getting into any of the schools they were applying to. I mean a .6 G.P.A. averaged with a 4.0 G.P.A. still only equals a 2.3. How would that get anyone into a top rate school?

Well, as it turns out, when you transfer schools your grades that are poor will not transfer with you. WHAT? Yes, they will not transfer since schools only want to include your good grades. In other words, they will force you to take the classes you did poorly in again.

Ok, sounds somewhat fair to me, but at the same time this policy does not seem fair. I was the type of student who sort of made sure I did decent (2.7 G.P.A.) my first few years, but never put enough effort into my studies to do really well until the last two years. My final two years I got a 4.0 G.P.A. and was quite proud of my accomplishments. However, what I found appalling was that some of my friends who had failed out of school were receiving rewards for their academic excellence.

Now do not get me wrong, I was very happy for them, but I wondered what kind of system we have when you can do nothing your first year in school and still be rewarded while the person who does average the first year will never have the opportunity to be rewarded. Hmmm, makes one think that it is beneficial to party like crazy during your first of school and not worry about your grades. Why not, you can transfer and the poor grades will magically disappear from your transcript.

Ok, maybe that is not the best idea. In fact it is NOT the best idea and I would never encourage anyone to do poorly, but I guess I would suggest that just because you do poorly early in your college years you should not give up hope. Evaluate your situation and get your act together. Be sure to transfer and then work your butt off. The system permits a second chance for those who struggle initially. If you fall into this situation, take advantage of your second chance.
