As a 1998 graduate of JMU and a current graduate student in higher education administration (at a prestigious Research I institution), I can honestly say that JMU is like no other school. As a student of higher education, I am consistently tasked with studying successful campuses and I can honestly say that JMU is an institution worthy of the highest praise. It is a place where you will grow intellectually, socially, and spiritually and a place where you have the freedom and the support to explore and to discover. JMU offers students many ways to get involved in campus life. From my experience, those who commit themselves to JMU and to its opportunities are rewarded with a greater understanding of themselves and the world around them.
At JMU, the courses are challenging. However, it is the responsibility of the individual student to avail his/herself of the opportunities for intellectual enrichment that JMU provides. Yes, if you are looking for a party school, you will find that at JMU (as you will at most any institution). But, more importantly, you will also find a community of active, interested, students and consummate faculty and administrators that will be an integral part of your experience.
Although I am from VA, I can count on one hand the number of weekends I went home in my 4 years. I believe this is typical of most students and I would strongly challenge the opinion that it is a “suitcase school.” Greek life is part of JMU but it is not an overwhelming presence. Greeks and Independents have good relationships and most social functions attract members from both the Greek and the Independent community.
I chose JMU over W&M, Tech, UVA, and several other strong institutions because I felt that JMU had something special- a spirit and an enthusiasm that I found only on that campus. My time at JMU prepared me well for my graduate studies and it helped me develop a foundation that empowered me to seek a doctoral degree in education.
In closing, I believe that the curriculum at JMU is strong, the opportunities are unlimited, and the experience is unforgettable!
