Just Do It

If you really want to go to college, I strongly suggest you complete and send in applications as early as possible. The earlier you apply, the greater your chance of getting in to the schools that most interest you. The last statement holds true under most but not all circumstances. If you do not qualify to get into a school, early applications will typically only yield an early rejection.

One reason for an early applications is that many schools limit the number of new students they accept in a given year. Thus, you risk loosing a slot to a less qualified student if you wait too long. For instance February 1, 2000 was the deadline for all students wanting admission to the University of Texas. Of course had you applied earlier, it is possible you could already have purchased your new team spirit clothes since some early applicants may have received the good word. At the most difficult schools, based solely on admission, rushing to get the application in at the last minute often adds pressure which may yield a lower quality application because of the rush. At that point you are competing for the last slots to be filled with an application that may not reflect your true abilities.

Another reason for an early application is the ability to obtain financial aid. Often the early applicants also get better and sometimes more money through the school's financial aid department. Of course there are other sources. (See my review of the HLSR scholarships.) Thus, getting your acceptance early may put you in line for scarce financial aid before those who wait until the last moment to apply.

The last reason I will share is piece of mind. It is nice to know where you are going and not have additional stress as you close out your high school career. For some that is as far as they will go, but for the college students it is just the end of your easy education. College is a bit tougher since the professors will not necessarily prod you along like your high school teachers may have done. Being able to get set for college and enjoy your final days of school are easier than waiting every day for a letter about getting in to your choice of Universities.

Good Luck!
