College for me is a struggle in itself, but the financial aid program can make it harder at times. I've have attended U of M now for almost 3 years and have been dealing with this program ever since. This is one of the greatest programs the school and government could ever offer, but it has its downside.
I do get financial aid from U of M, but it is extremely hard to get it. First of all, the downside to this program is the application that you have to fill out and turn in by a certain date, usually March 1. This application is a long and lengthy process. It asks for family history and then it wants all of your tax information. We'll to fill the tax part out, you have to do your taxes. After this is turned in, you will get other documents in the mail over the next couple of months that you need to fill out and turn. These documents are on how much of a loan you need or what type of grants or scholarships you are receiving. By the time the fall semester rolls around, you should have completed all of your paperwork. It takes a long time after that to see what type of grants or loans they have approved you for. The aid office takes your application in order as it was received. Most of the time you do not know whether you have been accepted or not until the middle of the semester. This makes me frustrated because I never know if I'm going to have to owe the school or not. It's hard for me because I am on my own and struggling to get my life going. I depend solely on this program to stay in school. I wish that the process could go much faster.
The best part about this program is that you do not have to start paying of the loans until after you graduate, unless you drop to under a full time status. This is a bonus because I don't have to worry about these bills right now. It will be easier for me to pay them off when I have a full time job.
I believe the whole program in itself is to teach us responsibility. I think we deserve a grade from the financial program. To me it is a class in itself. It has taught me how to be extremely responsible, even though I get really frustrated with the whole process. This program really helps and I wouldn't be here if I didn't have this program.
