| beanbear's Full Review: Boston Acoustics 4" 2-Way Speakers CX4e |
Synopsis:
A great sounding replacement option for older European car owners.
Design/Quality:
These are very nicely built, but don’t come with grilles. The magnet is among the best for this size speaker and the tweeter is borrowed from Boston’s higher end line. The build quality is very good – these are solid speakers that will last a long time.
Performance:
I replaced the worn-out but stock speakers on our old ’81 Mercedes 300SD with these models. The sound is phenomenally better and near the quality of higher-end Bose car audio systems. The highs are clearer and create a more dispersed soundstage, but there is little bass. The mid-bass tends to drop off smoothly, but prematurely. We installed an 8” Rockford-Fosgate Punch sub and Punch 50 amp to compensate – both were great investments and really rounded out the sound.
Value:
Great for those in older European cars that desperately need to replace those older weak speakers. They’re great sounding, but need help on the low end. Properly amplified, these speakers can do wonders.
