Its Time!

Mar 23 '00 (Updated Mar 27 '00)

It's time.

I've had a DVD player for 1 year now - paid 300 dollars, which was a decent price then, as the format was a year old. There was a nice, not large selection of movies, and while VCR has its place, I like my movies letterboxed. Didn't used to, but as I notice more and more things just missing from a picture, I got more and more annoyed(there is a scene in Star Trek First Contact, where in the theatre, Picard tells Data to turn off his emotion chip, Data does a little neck shrug thing, scene moves on...semi funny. On the VHS release, you see Picard, but you can't see Data...the scene completely loses its comic bent, and makes it look like Picard is talking to a shoulder).

So, took the plunge. In one years time...

DVD has dropped in price - you can get a good player for 150 now..half what I paid (grrrrr), and well within the price of a good quality VCR.

DVD movies are everywhere now..in fact, major stores such as Best Buy sell more DVD movies per week then VHS!! Most if not all major releases come out on both formats, usually day and date. Add the extras a DVD can offer - a choice of pan and scan or letterboxing, surround sound, commentary, making of, outtakes, etc - to me, if you like to own movies, DVD is the way to go.

If your a renter, well...DVD is exploding there too, and its getting easier to find dvd's for rent. I'd much rather watch The Matrix, or James Bond, in Surround sound, then in plain old stereo...its just more immersive, more enjoyable, more fun!

DVD is not laserdisc, set your mind at ease...heck, laserdisc never had it this good, never had this kind of sell through, and frankly, came out too early...VCR's were just coming into there own, who wanted another format?

But now, people want more, demand more, for one thing. VHS is old and limited. Too many of my tapes, my wonderous movies, have died. Sniff.

Granted...I still use mine, for the rare tv show I tape, or my little girl's many many tapes, but even there, I'm buying her movies on DVD too, now..at least the ones I want to last, the ones I want around when she has kids....I don't expect my VHS copy of Lady and the Tramp to be all that playable 20 years from now. My DVD copy will be. Which is good, because I'm getting rather annoyed having to buy the same movie every seven to ten years just cause Disney needs to make another buck...oops, different rant, nevermind.

Like I said...it's time!
