Where there is Smoke!Jan 09 '01 Write an essay on this topic.Hi: As we all know tobacco was just fine before the "smoke became a fire." As well, did we not see how a multitude of "safe and user friendly products" ended up being "unsafe and deadly". So it just might be with the popular and ...hmmm...pied piper cell phone. Personally I learned at an early age that if I put my hand too near to the flame I am liable to get burned. Cell phones could or could not be a hazard if used for prolonged periods of time. Am I prepared to take that chance? Should I be willing to put myself and my family at possible risk just for the sake of...hmmm...is it "keeping up with the Jones?" Where did I read "all things in moderation?"... "Too much of a good thing is dangerous"...hmmm...is this "food for thought?" Am I willing for the sake of convenience when the world is already at my fingertips and my senses are filled with activity, action, everyday stress and noise 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year? That's me sitting in my car at a red light enjoying the silence, good music or doing what I call my "serious thinking". I observe the person in the automobile beside me totally wrapped up in a charade of flushed cheeks, waving arms and intense conversation over the cell phone...hmmm...is this "breathe deeply and count to three?" The road rage driver who just cut me off while talking and carrying on a heated two way conversation on his/her cell phone...hmmm...is this "do under others?" Driving defensively and devoting my undivided attention to the "deadly weapon" in my control demands ALL my senses. In order to be safely connected to the road and surrounding traffic I need to exhibit a "safe driver attitude." The last thing needed is a phone ringing and yet another distraction from my duties as a trusted vehicle owner...hmmm...is this called "putting my best foot forward?" For me, use of the telephone at home and office is all that I am willing to spare of my precious health, space, time and effort...hmmm...is this "a light at the end of a tunnel?" |
