WHAAASSSUUP! -- a Budweiser classic
Written: Feb 10 '00
Pros:funny, true
Cons:superbowl version wasn't necessary
Budweiser's "WHAAASSSUUP!" TV commercial is easily the funniest commercial on TV right now. I'd venture to say that it is already one of the all-time classics, right up there with Burger King's "Where's the beef?" campaign in the 80's.
What makes this commercial special is that it has quickly become part of people's vernacular. Can you go anywhere lately and not hear someone say:
1) WHAAASSSUUUP! Blaaaaaahhhhh --or
2) ...watchin' the game, drinkin' a Bud --or
3) Where's Dukey?
Occassionally, a commercial transcends itself and it's message becomes a part of our daily lives (Just Do It, Got Milk?, etc.). I think this commercial has already succeeded in doing this.
The question is "Why?"
The answer is very simple. The basic, brief and humorous dialogue between the four characters in the ad absolutely sums up what it's like to be a guy. Guys don't chat. By saying "Whaaasssuuup!", a guy is essentially saying "Hey dude! I'm really psyched to see you. Are you ready to party down?" Except that's not how guys talk....all we have to say is "Whaaassssuuup!" We are men of a few words... unlike our female counterparts.
If a buddy calls and asks what I'm doing, I answer his question (e.g., "watchin' the game, drinkin' a beer"). I don't tell him what I'm wearing, how much I bought it for, what I'm eating, how many calories it has, the rumors running around my office about the boss and his secretary, and how my spouse's addiction to watching so much football is going to land us in counseling.
No, this Budweiser ad pretty much nails what it's like to be a guy right on the head. It makes us laugh because that's how so many of us guys communicate with each other. The guys in the commercial do a great job demonstrating that an entire conversation with complete understanding can happen with only a few simple words.
Uh-oh... gotta go... my wife just hollered to me that she needs to have a word with me. Yeah right, just a word ;>)
