portable MP3 Player, 4Gb

Aug 05 '00

I purchased a Hango Personal Jukebox several months ago and highly recommend it to anyone looking for the ability to store ALL their favorite songs in one place. With 4Gb of storage, the unit holds something like 100 hours of music. It comes with software to download easily from CDs as well as standard MP3 files. It's more expensive than the 64-128Mb portables ($750) and it takes a little longer to start up and jump from one track to a non-sequential one, but on a per minute of storage it's a fraction of the cost of anything else. A major advantage of this player over others I've seen with hard drives is that it only reads from the hard drive in short bursts, then stores the material in memory. This allows it to run for 10 hours on the internal battery. It also slows it down when you skip from one track to another that's not what the unit was expecting, but this is not a real issue since it still plays within a few seconds. I know the unit is sold through Hammacher Schlemmer, but I purchased mine directly from the company's US distributor over the web. It's made in Korea. I also had a problem with the unit recharging when I first got it. I called their support line, got a quick response, sent the unit back and received it repaired a few days later at no cost. It was definitely one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had.
