| Coolnessa's Full Review: Sony CDX-52 Car CD Changer |
I purchased this Cd changer for myself as a Christmas Present in 99. I'd just purchased a new car the previous August, and I needed a Cd changer to complete the package! Most importantly, I wanted to go with a changer instead of a new head deck, because I didn't want people to look into my car and see something to steal. If someone were to look into my car, they will see my stock stereo. Who wants to break into a car for that?
I spent much less for my changer than the retail price listed on this site. I paid $200, and that included a 5 year warranty, which was around $50. If I remember correctly, I got a deal, because I was previously employed by the company who sold me the changer.
Anyway, I had problems with it for the first couple of months (winter months). It was almost as if the changer had to be broke in. If I ejected the cassette to insert a new cd, sometimes it wouldn't eject. If it did eject, and I successfully inserted a new cd, the changer would play the first cd (when you turn the changer on after ejecting and replacing the cassette, it plays cd #1 as default), however when I attempted to switch cds, it would lock up on me. By locking up on me, I mean that I would have NO music until I pulled over, and handled the problem in my trunk. In order to handle it, I would have to push down (gently) at an angle to relocate the placement of the cassette in the changer. When I felt it pop into place, I knew it would eject. It worked every time.
All of a sudden one day, I stopped having problems with it. I had taken it in a couple of times to where I had it installed, and he offered to replace it (at no cost, obviously), but suggested I give it a couple of months to "break-in." I would never have guessed that a cd changer needed to break-in, however I haven't had one single problem with it in (7) months.
I'm not sure if this is a default for all cd changers, however one thing I like about my Sony is that if I turn the changer off (excluding when I remove the cassette), when I turn it back on it will come back to the exact spot in the same song as when I turned it off.
In shopping around for my changer, several people suggested to me not to be concerned about finding one with a wireless remote. They would laugh and say, "You can have the controls mounted where ever you want, what do you need a remote for?" I can assure you I utilize my remote on a regular basis. Call me lazy, but it has it's conveniences.
The only thing I dislike about my changer, is that I haven't figured out to fast forward through a song without skipping the song completely. I know this option is available, as I've done it on accident before, but I've yet to figure out how to do it intentionally. (I could always read the manual, huh?) :)
The sound quality is great. When I have the air conditioning (or heater) on, I get a little static, however I've been told by Ford that that is a default in the sound proofing of my car, and I can have that fixed under my warranty. My sound isn't as loud as it is when I am using my radio or my tape player, however I've been told that this is the norm with most all cd changers.
All in all, I enjoy my changer very much. We had a rough start, but there hasn't been one bump since then. I think I got very much product for my money.
