Before the advent of digital cameras, people really had one choice for their instant photography needs, whatever their motivation(tee hee). Polaroids have always provided the consumer with instant, fair-quality photos for a modest price. They have quite a few practical benefits from commercial use(such as recording the original condition of a shipment or retail display)to private use(such as taking pop shots at the neighbors sunbathing nude at the pool). But this camera, I have found, doesnt really speak well of Polaroids grand tradition of quality photography.
Granted, I bought this camera for just over $60. It uses the same polaroid 600 film as the more expensive cameras so I figured "hey, whats the difference, I'll take it!" Aside from the "One Step" not having as many features as other polaroids of greater price, I've found that the pictures are grainy and of much lower quality.
But I want to concentrate first on the few features. This camera has a rudimentary slide selector for choosing relative light levels. It's almost useless because I can distinguish between shots taken in a darker environment and those in places with better lighting. The point of the switch is to compensate for the light difference and give you good films no matter. It does not! The other feature this camera offers is auto focus. I havent had any bad experience with this feature so I can safely say it works as advertised. I've taken landscapes and close-ups and I havent had any problem with focus at all. Hey there's a good thing!
Now, my friend and I both have poaroids but of different models. So we performed a little test. One at a time we aimed our respective cameras at his bookshelf and snapped away. His pictures were much clearer even though we used the exact same 600 film. His photos took better advantage of available light and the images were crisp and accurate. Mine in the other hand were grainy as I mentioned before and dark and objects in the photo took on a hazy look. There was no comparison really. My camera was inferior.
Yes this camera looks futuristic and shnazzy as far as polaroids go but this camera is strictly utilitarian. If you want to take nice shots that you'd be happy to show off, this camera is not for you. Opt for a better model(besides the price difference may only be $20). I'd recommend using this camera at work for photos for documentation purposes only.
I should add that if you've never used a polaroid before, the film is relatively expensive. You'll pay $1-$2 per photo depending on film quality. I think now since we have digital cameras and the capabilty to create excellent photos in very little time on your PC, you may consider that option. But thats another review. Take care friends.
