Why not to get an Mp3 player?
Jan 08 '01
So you thinking of investing one or two hundred dollars in an mp3 player? Or maybe save some money by getting a CD player for half the price. Well I’ll save you all that trouble.
I'll tell you’re the overall right now.
Don’t get it
Here is why:
An mp3 player is the newest way to listen to audio on the road, and sure its small, sleek, light, and so forth. But what about the thing most people care about most? Price.
When your buying an mp3 player it'll probably cost 200 dollars give or take a bit. And that’s just the average mp3 player. You can spend around 400 dollars on a 6gb player.
Here is what you get for 200 dollars
For a two hundred dollar player you’ll probably get about 64mb of memory, now that can hold about 16 songs at an average kps of less the CD quality. The better the sound the more room its going to take up, and if your looking for the CD experience in a more compact gizmo, a mp3 player can hold about 8 songs. Now that’s only 8 songs. If you take my advice make the sound quality as poor as possible, so that way you might be able to squeeze 20-25 songs in it.
When you get a mp3 player like a Nomad you are given a parallel port cable which transfers a bit less the a USB cable but the Nomad is a bit older then players like maybe the Samsung Yepp.
USB can transfer about 1mb a second from what I hear and that’s pretty good, you'll be done in a few mins.
And wait! You'll need more money
Most players can be expanded by the use of smart cards. Smart cards cost about 30-50 dollars. Usually 50 dollars, and are available at 32mb or 64mb. Here in Canada a 64mb Smart Card is in the hundred ranges.
But there is an exception, some players can not have more memory, players that are stuck at 64mb, players such as the Sony Music Clip ($300) and I have a review on that if you want to check it out.
So I heard about more memory?
There are two different mp3 players on the market which feature 6gb of memory, that’s 600mb, that’s more then 500mb more then the average player. Yet it cost 400 dollars as I mentioned before.
But as an alternative, some players are using zip discs, or that’s what I think there called, and these disc are fairly small and hold 40mb each at a low cost at 6.99! I like this feature, and so it lets you have up to 80mb of room storage.
Overall rating
If you really even read this opinion, you'll know what my overall rating is. But as an exception I recommend that if your still really want an mp3 player get one that uses zip discs.
