| pjwlk's Full Review: RIM Blackberry Two Way Pager |
The Research in Motion Blackberry 950 is a first rate device. It's design is extremely well thought out it's construction is rugged. The device is very intuitive to use and really doesn’t require any reading of the manual if it is pre-activated for you.
The company I work for has paid for my "Berry" as well as the service agreement which is about $40 CDN/month. (You can get a lot on a cell phone for that price) The service agreement includes unlimited email and internet access (text only of course) as well as regular style numeric paging.
Email attachments are handled by the web based portion of the system and can be forwarded to anywhere you like. The Blackberry uses a proxy of sorts when retrieving web pages from the internet which converts regular web pages to a more readable format for the unit and works very well. Unlike regular pagers, the Blackberry's pager system will keep the message until they are deliverable to you. This eliminates all those pages you missed because you were in underground parking or in the hospital waiting room etc.
After using my Berry for a few days I started asking myself why other system don't have some of the features that it does. The unit will add proper punctuation and capitalization to your text as you write it and is just what you wanted about 98% of the time. It also has an "auto text" feature that eliminates the need for adding apostrophes into most contractions. I've set up short forms on my unit to be converted to text such as "wyp" to "Would you please" "pcm" to "Please call me" and so on.
The Blackberrry has the following features; Email, Notepad, Calendar, Alarm, Pager, Address book, Internet & Calculator. One single "AA" battery lasts me for about two weeks. Surprisingly, the most efficient way to type is with your thumbs as you hold the unit in both hands. Just to the right of the screen is a clickable thumb wheel that beats everything I've seen yet. It makes the whole unit very easy and very fast to use.
We are currently using both the original 950 and the larger screened 957 (palm sized) at work and the consensus between us all is that the smaller original Blackberry is easier and more comfortable to use. The larger 957 has a nicer screen though but I wouldn't trade my 950 for it. The OS is upgradable and you can also add applications to it as well. The unit will reset itself if it detects a lock-up but this is a very infrequent occurrence.
I would like to see a "Cut and Paste" function added to the unit and some sort of "Blue Tooth" (wireless network) or Infra Red functionality for printing built into it. Aside form that I can't say anything negative about the unit at all.
