How to choose the best DVD player.

Mar 01 '00

Well, my interest on DVD has growing since they just come out. I'm kind of pioneer in buying the DVD player. I quite impress with the quality of the DVD player i posses. It is Phillips Magnavox 845. Pretty good at the time i bought it. I wish i could buy the flagship ( Sony DVP-9000 ) but way too expensive.

Let me tell a bit about my hometheater equipment. I have Magnepans Speaker ( they are awesome !!!... i fell in love since i first heard them ). Denon pre & power amp ( i have to sell my Classe && Aronov power amp due to money constraint ), Sony HIFI VHS, RBH subwoofer ( i ordered after i tried to order big Mirage but very fussy ), Monster Cable, Big Screen Sony TV.. 35 inch if i'm not mistaken. I have Pioneer Laser Disc which i sold later on. Also i have Pioneer Dual Disc ( DVD/LD ) player which i sold after i got my DVD.

There are some criteria you might want to look in order to buy DVD
1. Ease of Use.
-- With a lot of DVD players out there. You might see a lot of function in the remote && DVD player. But mostly, the function depend on the software on DVD alone.
-- Remote suppose has many fuctionality. The illumination might help you in the dark. My remote even will make sound once you open the DVD player, so you can easily find it.

2. Built-In-Decoder
-- Some of the player even have built in dolby digital decoder. So you can simply hook-up to Dolby-Digital READY reciever. If you have Dolby Digital decoder in your reciever or preamp, you don't want to buy the built in decoder since it will cost you more.

3. DTS output
-- although not many software support it. It is really nice to have the feature. Most of users believe DTS is much better than DD in movie theater. However, since DD has been universal by the FCC, so many users that have DD should be fine. And DSS, HDTV all use DD.

4. DD output
-- most DVD player has this output. It's either toslink or coaxial. so i guess you might not to worry about it.

5. Function button
-- such as fast or slow forward, rewind. You can choose the variety of speed to fast forward the movie. My player can forward up to 30X. that is really cool. I can skip the part i don't like.

6. Multiangel View
-- it depends on software. Also i can say you can magnify the movie up to 8X. it is really cool feature. Well, you can enlarge the part you like and attract to your eyes.

7. Component Video
-- three component output to either your TV or your projection. This is nice feature if you have TV or projector that can support the feature.

8. S-Video output
-- same explaination as 7.

9. RCA Video Output
-- same explaination as 7. Make sure you have TV that at least have RCA video input. If you have VCR, you can use it but the quality not as good as you direct into TV.

10. Parental Lock.
-- i guess i don't have to explain. You should already know what the function.

11. 24hz/96 bit DAC.
-- Most of the current DVD has this capability. It is much better sounding than the old DVD player.

12. 10 bit DAC video
-- Most DVD players support this feature

13. Dual laser pick-up
-- Sony popular with this feature. First laser for DVD and other for VCD or CD audio. Quite neat feacture.

If you have question, please respond and i'll try to help you out.
