| tfung's Full Review: B&W Powered Subwoofer ASW 4000 |
The ASW-4000 resides at the top of its line. It sports a 15-inch woofer, driven by a massively powerful, onboard 450-watt amplifier. This unit features passive speaker-level and line-level inputs and outputs; the outputs are high-passed to keep the bass out of your satellite speakers. (The speaker-level high-pass filter is 6 dB/octave at 80 Hz into an 8-ohm load, and the line-level filter is 18 dB/octave at 80 Hz.) It's available in a variety of finishes, and it comes with spiked feet to keep it in place even if it isn't on carpet.
This unit should be adequate for even extremely large rooms, but if you have anything less than a home arena, you'll likely be happy with the step-down ASW-3000 ($1500 list), a model also sporting a 15-inch driver. It has a less powerful amp, and delivers slightly less low-frequency response (although it still drops to an earth-shaking 18 Hz). At half the list price of this model, it's worth considering.
