Forget MTV: It's all about MTV2

Written: Apr 18 '00 (Updated Apr 18 '00)
Pros:some original commercials, they're using the internet
Cons:too many shows, not enough videos, cheesitude of current videos

First I would just like to say that I'M NOT GRIPING. I am merely stating my epinion, so don't get yourself bent out of shape, fer chrissake. Although at the time there wasn't much else to watch anyway, I really liked MTV when it began. They were just doing all videos, all the time. It was like a radio, you could just leave it on all day. Not anymore. I guess that was too simple for them. They wanted to be a "real" network (as if.) Alas, the time of videos all day is long gone. Just like a chump, MTV had to go and get cute and creative with their programming (I think the first one was like a game show or a cartoon).
As for what they're playing? Yeah, <sigh>, I know. It's made my ears hurt, too. While most of it's cheesy and shallow.....hey, that's what the kids are buying. What are you gonna do? It's all about being new and not old. Whoever's selling the most gets first crack at having their video in that lineup. That's just business. God bless capitalism and everything, but I am SOMEWHAT ANNOYED with the boy band epidemic. It is one of the main reasons that I never watch MTV. It doesn't bother me, though, cuz I stay kinda busy anyways. I guess the little girls need someone to dream about. I must say though, some of the boy bands REALLY have some LAME songs out there circulating right now. My left ear actually started bleeding when I was listening to that stuff once.
Back to MTV: I DO like the implentation of internet participation in some of their shows. I think stuff like that (like chat and polling) has a big future in television. Some of the MTV commercials are pretty sweet, too. But that's about all that's cool with MTV.
Like a restless teenager, MTV has to do everything in excess. Lemme ask you, who needs the MTV Music Awards, anyways? Everyone already knows who will win, it's just a big schmoozefest for the lackeys there who need to network, plus the whole thing rakes a ton of advertising revenue for MTV.
I don't want to rant on. To sum up, MTV is a successful television channel. I'm afraid their programming just doesn't appeal to me anymore. None of my friends watch it. I'm 21, and I have a feeling that there are many others out there in my age group who feel the same way as I do. It's all pretty simple, though: the channel is there now for another generation. I'm going to check out MTV2!
