Motorola's Timeport: Confusing, Confusing, Confusing.
Written: Aug 28 '00 (Updated Sep 07 '00)
Pros:Good Battery, 3-Band capability
Cons:Terrible Software
Let me tell you how a technically great phone can become an absolute nightmare when the software that runs it is of poor quality. I bought the Motorola Timeport because of it's great look and it's handy 3-band capability that allows me to run in on the GSM networks of virtually any country in the world. The phone also has a great battery performance. The problem though is the software. Let me give you an example: When you lock your keys you'd expect the ON/OFF button to be locked as well? Wrong, the ON/OFF key is exempt of being locked meaning any time you put your phone in your pocket you could potentially turn the thing off. Another example of ill conceived software is the phone-book. Accessing, entering and modifying the phone book is not an easy task and the simple system Nokia uses makes the Motorola look very complicated. What about the ringers? How cool is it to receive and download different little tunes like you do with Nokia phones? Too hard for your Motorola. The list of such omissions and complications is actually quite long and unfortunately few of them are detectable until they start annoying you a few weeks into your phone ownership. If you want a 3-band capability and a technically sound phone the Motorola might be for you although I would suggest waiting for the new Nokia models.
