| counsel's Full Review: Infinity Delta 30 Speaker (Black) |
As a long-time owner of Infinity speakers, I'd come to my present faithfulness to this brand the hard way: I have a constant cynical view of all magazine reviews and owner raves combined with a rather tenacious adherence to A-B comparisons in the hifi store sound room. Technical specs are one thing. I think I have good ears, and few things are as subjective, in my view, as the perception of sound quality in a pair of speakers.
Because, bottom line, I don't want specs - I want my speakers to sound good. Infinity speakers always have, despite my constant re-testing each time I go out to buy some, and the Delta 30 model is no exception.
I never use a rock band or Top 40 tune for my speaker comparisons. I have a couple of CDs I bring with me for my A-B testing ritual. First comes Ellis Marsalis' Heart of Gold album, where I listen to the interplay of quiet jazz piano, upright bass and the trap set. I walk to each speaker and listen to the response of each driver - the tweeters on the cymbals and high notes, the woofers on the upright, the midrange piano notes. Then, I stand in the "sweet spot" - the center of the listening area, and imagine myself in a nightclub. If I don't have to imagine too hard, the speakers are good. Ellis was *present* - these speakers were good.
The second album, the definitive Phillips recording of Carl Orff's Camina Burana, is a test of dynamic range handling capabilities. How well do the Infinitys handle the soft-to-loud range of the first movement? Very well indeed, in my opinion.
Infinity speakers have always been on the cutting edge in tweeter technology. I would like bigger woofers. And one of these days, I can hope for speakers with this range of sound in a smaller package. Until then, go with the Delta 30s - or any of the Delta series Infinitys, for that matter.
