Beware: Nokia 9110
Dec 08 '00
I have bought 18 months ago the 9110 "Communicator", and while I have been a very satisfied user in the first months, I now have a more reluctant opinion about this top of the Nokia line.
1 - Usability : Good, but could be improved quite a lot.
Hardware:
- external connectors have been badly designed, and create mechanical problems with the internal connector on the motherboard;
- the mechanisms and contacts for the hinge are not very robust and lead to frequent failures
Software:
- the synchronization process between a PC and the PIM/agenda work almost well, except if you have a large (>600) address book [the machine could very easily handle it, but the software currently available has been poorly designed and fail miserably]
- the "todo" list is not very accessable, and it too has a very poor design option: while outlook, pilot, etc have 3 options for a task, plus "done", the Nokia's has 2 + "done", which creates a sync problem.
2 - Robustness : Poor
As stated above, some major design flaws make the machine fragile.
Mine has needed a repair almost every quarter.
3 - Service : Average, but well under what Nokia touts
- The "Nokia Club Service" allows you to get instant repair during the initila warranty period (12-15 months), BUT in MY experience has never fulfilled the Nokia-stated promess to get a loaner mobile while the Nokia phone is under repair.
- Personal situation: my machine just gets out of repair (I had to pay for that), but it seems that now other parts are failing.... Not sure what Nokia customer services will decide to do!
My current advice:
- DO NOT assume that this phone will last more than 12-13 months.
- IF this lifelength is compatible with the price you have to pay, you should certainly consider favorably buying this machine.
- Note however that accessories are not as well-designed as you might expect.
- Same opinion should certainly be applied to the new 9110i (basically a 9110 with some a memory card and extra software included).
- As far as the new 9210 (expected early 2001) is concerned, you should not trust Nokia's or vendor's affirmation and check if the problems related above have been corrected.
