| harleyds's Full Review: Velodyne 10" Powered Subwoofer VA-1210 |
My quest for the perfect subwoofer led me to several audio stores and endless hours of chit chat with the local music buff getting paid about $7.00 an hour to stand around and make suggestions. Why do I say this? I told everyone one of them I wanted good solid bass for playing music loud and also for Home Theatre Sound. I tried 3 different solution before I was convinced into the trying out the Velodyne VA 1210.
Immediately after plugging it all together I fell in love with this sub. With its 10’ active forward firing woofer combined with its 12’ passive aimed at the ground, the sound was incredible. Increasing the volume on the sub alone to 5 out of 10 made the window panes feel as if they were going to shake out of the molding. The deep bass notes were crisp and clear and when tuned right, does not over power the speakers.
The VA 1210 comes with a variety of controls on the back to help you tune the sound to your taste. The Low Pass Crossover dial runs from 210 Mhz to 40 Mhz. A crossover switch is used in conjunction with two sets of output jacks for the left and right speaker (I didn’t use this). There is also a Auto-On switch so the sub will turn off when it does not receive a signal below a certain decibel. I found this feature useless for the type of music I listen to. It would turn on and off every few seconds as the beat changed. I didn’t try this feature during movie playing. I got around this by plugging in the power cord directly to the back of my receiver so whenever my receiver was on, my sub came on automatically.
I bought the VA 1210 almost 3 years ago back in 1997 and do not regret it at all. I paid a tall price in my opinion with it being the most I paid for any stereo component. I got my Pioneer VSX-902S at a demo sale for $399. For someone that is not a heavy audiophile and just wanted good solid bass that shakes your pants, this is the sub you need.
