Pros:free roaming, good reception, excellent phones, many features
Cons:"less than knowledgable" employees
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this service to individuals looking for a reasonably priced cellular provider. The only major complaint was the customer service.
When I decided to get a cell phone, the choice was basically dependent on what phones were available. Pac-Bell has the best "free" phone (Nokia 6190), and a great selection of other phones, which I believe are superior to those offered by other providers.
Rates are quite reasonable, unless you start with the lowest plan, which is for emergencies anyway. Standard plans come with caller ID, voicemail and free roaming in California/Navada. The plan I chose cost 29.99 a month and included 120 anytime minutes and a choice of either free long distance, free mobile to mobile or 1000 bonus weekend minutes. All three were included free for the first three monts of my service.
One I signed up, I recieved my phone (Ericsson T-28z), SIM card and charger. A few days after activation, my SIM card locked up, but that was quickly remedied by a call to customer service.
The customer service people were quite knowledgeable, but I wish I could say the same for the employees in the store. Except for the salesperson I activated my phone with, every other employee I spoke with either admited they didn't know the answer to one of my questions, or refered me to another location.
After many experiences with less than knowledgeable employees, I learned that it's best to call Pac-Bell directly ( a free call from your cell phone) and talk to them.
Overall, I was satisfied with reception and technical issues, but the customer service was lacking (just remember, call them.) Reception was sketchy or sometimes nonexistent in remote areas or in some buildings, but in most places, calls are clear. The free roaming is a big plus, especially if you travel in the California/Navada area frequently.
***UPDATE***
Since I wrote this review, Pac-Bell has become Cingular wireless. This has not negatively impacted any aspect of my service. I was able to keep the pricing plan and minutes I had signed up for, with the option to switch over to a new Cingular plan. I hope this merger will lead to more knowledgable employees in their stores.
