Ever since the days of Betamax, I've been hooked on Sony for VCRs. When I finally found myself in the market for a VHS machine I leaned towards Sony and that was backed up by the Consumer's Reports guide to VCRs a couple of years ago. So I went and got the closest product equivalent, the Sony SLV-761 and have not been disappointed. It is true that you could land a 747 with the remote control for this machine, but I replaced that for daily use with one from my JVC TV set. This machine has more functions than I will ever use on it as I just record a couple of programs on a daily basis. And since my cable box determines my TV station choice, most of the extra goodies are useless to me.
Picture quality does degrade somewhat over time, and I'll be looking to get a head cleaning package in the near future. I will say that my oldest Sony Betamax (an old mono unit) can still play my Beta tapes, although the sound quality is pretty awful (after nearly 20 years of use, it is to be expected). And I now have a new Sony Beta machine to allow me to use my tape library until doomsday.
Sony makes great VCRs and the SLV-761HF is part of this great tradition. I would suggest this or following models to anyone in the market for a VCR.
