Great quality, All the Benefits of DVDApr 11 '00 Write an essay on this topic. We have Sony DVPS500-D, which came along in the second wave of Sony DVD players, following the original flagship DVPS7000. This model was purchased in May 1998, and worked flawlessly every since. It delivers a crisp picture and reasonably high quality sound, truly showing off the incredible capabilities of the DVD format. The S500D was one of the first players to feature an on-board Dolby Digital decoder that can be connected directly to a 6-channel ready receiver, in my case a Denon. Using the S-Video connection, it feeds to a 50" Mitsubishi projection TV. I still remember the day we bought it, and just being so blown away by the sound and picture that was coming from the "Contact" DVD. To this day, it is always a joy to watch a movie on this machine. The initial set up could not have been any simpler, and everyday operation is hassle free. One particularly nice aspect about this player is that the Dolby Digital surround parameters can be adjusted and controlled. The first wave of machines that featured built-in decoders did not offer this flexibility. With a good ear and a little patience, it is easy to get accurate surround sound reproduction. There is a definite if not overwhelming distinction between regular Dolby Surround and Dolby Digital, and the option of having the decoder was worth every penny. If there is one problem, it is that it selects the Dolby Surround (2 channel) instead of the 5.1 on all discs except the Sony (Columbia, TriStar) discs, even when the auto track selection is on. In that case, you must go to the DVD menu to select 5.1 in the sound options. This is not really so much the case anymore, as almost all discs now contain the 5.1 mix exclusively. The on-screen display is easy to understand, and it is not at all difficult to calibrate the player's options to your liking. The remote, although it has a sea of buttons, is fairly easy to use. It has a duplicate of the jog dial from the face of the machine that allows easy speed changes, fast-forwarding and rewinding, and menu selection. When viewing any scene in a variety of slow or fast motion options, the picture still remains clear and jitter free. Many of the most used buttons will illuminate in the dark if exposed to light not too long ago. Judging by the success I have had with this particular model, I most certainly recommend any Sony DVD product. |
