Avoid the Sony STR-DE545

Sep 26 '00

I recently remodeled a room and installed a home theater setup. I purchased several new Sony products including: a 32" Wega TV (KV-32FS12 -- see my review), a DVP-650D 5-disc DVD changer, an existing Sony VCR, a speaker outfit from CambridgeSoundworks (MovieWorks 308 - see my review) and a Sony STR-DE545 Dolby Digital receiver. My issue is with that receiver.

When I set the system up I was initially very pleased. Dolby Digital is amazing, and regular CD music was fine, too. But, I did notice that the speakers that were not in use (i.e., the center channel and surrounds when listening to CD music) hissed quite a bit. I then noticed that the two front speakers also hissed - it just was not apparent when the music was loud enough. I called Crutchfield (where I bought it) and the technician suggested that maybe I had a loose connection, so I checked each one. It still hissed. I then happened to see that this receiver was reviewed on audioreview.com, and just about every review complained about the hiss. I emailed Crutchfield, pointed them to those reviews, and they wrote back that they would exchange the receiver.

I exchanged the receiver for another Sony, the STR-DE845. I am very happy with that one (except for the quirky remote).

So, look out for the 'DE545. Listen to it first if you are considering it. From my experience, and from what I have read, this is a bum product.
