Having had GTE, Sprint, & CellularOne ... I was thinking that all of them were the same; careless giants only intent on raising my rate and providing crappy service.
After I had a radical increase in calls ... I was on a CellOne 1000(?)California plan ... and wanting to stay with CellOne ... but switch to a National plan, I was disappointed after they wouldn't help me out by not requiring a 12 month commitment on my end (I had 3 months with bills greater than $250).
I shopped the market - I called Art, owner of the San Jose based store called PrimeTime 408-929-3225 and he stopped by my work place with a briefcase of cell phones (all working) and brochures. He'd sold me the CellularOne plan ... and I'm totally impressed with his customer service, responsiveness & dedication. Not only that, but his rates are the same - even though he drives to me several times to make the sale.
Anyway, after talking with Art ... I loved the idea of the Nextel phones ... I could get 2 - one for me, and one for my wife - allowing us to use the UNLIMITED (FREE) radio call anywhere in the Bay Area... also:
Nationwide coverage
600 anytime mins
second interval billing
no long distance in the USA
3 way calling
** SPEAKER PHONE **
month to month contract
high-retail value of the phones
internet capable phones (service not yet rolled out)
[and free incoming phone calls for 2000; promotion ended 2/2000]
Having heard that the service is 'bad' ... and knowing Art well, he leant me a phone for a week....
We got them. :)
Summary:
As I travel about 100% of the time around the USA now, I find myself on my Nextel all the time. My favorite thing about Nextel is the speakerphone. I use it all the time.... especially driving. Much safer, and very easy. Just put it on speaker, and drop it in your lap or the seat and talk away. The speaker is actually TOO loud 1/2 of the time. When i'm on the road ... and talking with my wife, I just stick the phone on a table in the center of the hotel room and walk around and talk!! Very convenient
The other cool thing is that I can talk on my cellphone in RADIO mode whenever I'm not sure where my wife is - it's possible to do this like a walkietalkie or a cellphone (although it's 1/2 duplex - like a CB). This is extremely helpful in a large department store, or when one of us is picking the other up.
BTW, the service in the bay is good enough that my friends that had said the service was bad have changed their minds....
As my company grows ... I plan on adding more phones to my service - allowing us all to Radio Call each other.
Good luck
