Damned Fine TV!
Written: Jan 12 '00
Pros:Features and picture quality
Cons:Front speaker grill
I really like my Toshiba. It has survived two moves and keeps on going. The plastic trim is a bit cheesy, but it hasn't broke yet. The front speaker grill keeps falling off, but most of that is due to our two dogs smacking into it. Even at that it should have a better retention system.
The picture quality is excellent if you have a good source. Anytime you have such a large screen, any deficit in the source becomes quite apparent. A good video tape produces excellent results, but a so-so cable company is constantly providing junk pictures. I haven't had a chance to connect a Colorstream (component video) source, such as a DVD player, but I expect the results to be outstanding.
I am disappointed in the audio quality of the TV. There is another version with better audio, but I think Toshiba expects that people who buy 50 inch plus screen size TV will be setting up their own home theater systems. even at that, there is plenty of audio choices for hook up on the back panel.
Overall, I am pleased with the Toshiba. I think my second choice would be the Hitachi offerings. I bought the Toshiba due to a price I couldn't refuse, but it was a lucky situation. I have also bought two Toshiba VCR's and have been pleased with them. One did break, but a replacement voltage regulator (about 80 bucks) set it straight.
