I bought this Aiwa stereo because my brother had a similar model and I liked the things that came with it, such as a sub-woofer, 3 disc CD-changer, 2 tape decks, and a fiber optic cable port to connect to my minidisc player. I also liked the idea of surround sound.
The surround sound is a really cool feature. You have Dolby Pro Logic and regular surround. There are 5 speakers that make up the surround sound system: two main speakers, two rear speakers, and a center channel speaker. My system also came with a free sub-woofer. There are three dolby modes: normal, phantom, and three speaker. There are many surround modes: Disco, Live, Movie, Hall, and four modes that you can choose and customise yourself. The system works really well and has really good sound, if you are in the right environment. The system DOES NOT WORK if you have a small or odd shaped room. You have to center your listening area around the speakers, and the speakers must be very well spaced out, or you won't get the surround effect. My brother's works very well, but he has a huge room in his apartment, and his listening area is very well placed. Before you buy any surround system, do some good planning, and expect that you may have to do some moving of things to get the surround right.
Besides surround, you can choose graphic equilizations alone, or in addition to surround. It cannot be used with Dolby. The Geqs are: Rock, Pop, Jazz, Classic, Latin, and four you can choose yourself. You can also use T-bass (a bass booster), which has three levels. There is also BBE, which enhances the clarity of high frequency sounds. You can also change the levels of the speakers if your listening area is a little off center, but it doesn't help a whole lot.
You can choose certain effects, none of which I use. There is Delay, which I don't use, there is l-r, l+r input mode, which I don't use, there is echo, which I don't use, and there is feedback level, which I don't use. I guess they just don't suit my needs, maybe other peoples though.
There is of course the radio, and sometimes I have trouble getting a good reception with stations that should be easy to get clear. There are quite enough preset station slots, 32 total. The FM antenna is a pain, and it is really hard to find a good place for it.
Overall, the system has good sound. The front speakers are very good. The rear speakers are small, but still give good sound for rear speakers. The center channel has okay sound, but it is never really loud. When put together in a good room, they can all sound really great.
