A few Things before you by!

Recently a friend of mine was so impressed with the Picture and sound from my DVD player (not to mention all the neat stuff on DVD's) that he went out and bought one. He got it home and was disappointed with what he got. I asked him why. The sound wasn't quite that same as mine, the picture wasn't quite the same, and he felt Con'd into buying something that didn't live up to his expectations. He got the one that was an upgrade from mine, so why wasn't it as good if not better?
Here's why:
First, when you go to buy a DVD pay close attention to the TV, Receiver, and Speakers the sales person is using to show you how great this product is. This is what you need to know when stepping into that arena.
The sound quality comes directly from your speakers, DVD will put out the same digital sound to a Spark O Matic car speaker as it will a Bose wave. The difference in sound is how those speakers perform.
The Picture Quality comes from your TV. If you are watching a DVD on a 13 Black and white portable TV from 1972, you picture will Be 13 inches and in Black and White. DVD does not upgrade your TV. Again the Digital VideoDisc player can not change the abilities of your current Audio & Visual equipment.
The surround sound capability comes from your Receiver. If you have 3.1 surround, you will always have 3.1 surround. Even if your player is 5.1 and the Disc you are watching is 5.1 capable, you will only get 3.1 surround if that is what your receiver is.
I learned all this information when I was looking to by my equipment. I was amazed at how the people trying to sell me these products where more focused on the buttons and gadgets, than what I needed it for. One even tried to convince me to spend and extra 200 dollars for DVIX, which is the modern day equivalent of by a Beta VCR. It may be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but nobody wants it. I had one guy explain to me the benefits of 5.1 surround sound with a bunch of great drawings of how the sound moves around, but the room I have it in is nothing like his hypothetical room. When I explained that to him he began to show me buttons.
Then I met this guy Steve. He was kid that was killing time 'til his band made it. So he and I talked about guitars while his boss bored my wife with buttons, technical terms, and brochures with the manufactures opinion of how great their products where. Finally, Steve asked, "So what are you guys looking for?" I told him. Steve then asked what was the arrangement of the room was I putting it in, then what kind of sound I was looking for, then What kind of TV I had. Of course this confused me because nobody, not even his boss cared what I had or what I was looking for prior to Steve.
Steve was the first person to find out that other than a TV, I didn't have anything. Steve then took me to his Demo Room, picked out a Receiver first. I wanted 5.1 surround, and he found one that met my needs to the "T". Then we hooked up different speakers and I got to hear each set. To be honest with really loud levels, I couldn't tell the difference, but I chose a moderately priced set, easy to install and hide That's what I cared about it didn't want my house to look like the demo room. Then we picked out a DVD. I was surprised to find out that the DVD DID sound different with Different Speaker and Receivers, and that's when I learned why. Thew Player just plays with the equipment you use with it. A great analogy would be a BMW feels the same and looks the same even if you put a YUGO engine inside it.
Steve eventually saved me so much money that I bought a New CD player and Powered Sub-Woofer (ya gotta try watching twister with a powered sub woofer! J) Steve may have been the slickest Salesman in the world, but I would by from him again!
So to make this long story short. If you're in the market for DVD, remember:
What type of Receiver do you have or need
What kind of speakers do you have?
And what kind of TV will it be used on
