| ljrunner's Full Review: RCA DS2122RD Single LNB DIRECTV System |
This system design has been around for quite a while, and there has been little change since it was implemented.
The remote control is a standard RCA universal remote with DSS support (obviously) and is fairly straightforward albeit bulky. The 32-bit processor is a nice improvement over the previous 16-bit version. The increased menu speed and access time is greatly noticed (note to self, never get a 16-bit system).
The picture quality is the exact same as every other satellite receiver, but much like operating systems, the menu design of the individual platform is different from one system to another. Whichever you become accustomed to is going to be the best system for you. Personally I think the menu system of the RCA is a little juvenile. I prefer the sony in that arena. PLUS it is much easier to access program information further than 2 hours out using the sony system. It takes a while to access future program guides, and when you finally get there, switching back to the current time frame takes the same amount of effort.
The setup of the dish itself is rather labor intensive, and DEFINITELY requires 2 people to install well. I had a buddy help me with it and we got about a 98% strength signal. Needless to say I was extremely impressed that we did it without hurting ourselves or having to cut something down. The sony system has an LED that allows one person to complete the task more easily, but two people makes one heck of a difference.
Overall, I would say this system is the best buy for your money. It is large, ugly, and unwieldy compared to the smaller, trendier hughes and sony models, but hey. . .DSS for $99, free install kit, free external antenna, and 3 free months of programming. . .it more than pays for itself. You might even be able to snag a free movie channel or two in the process.
