PRIMESTAR or DirecTV?

Jan 04 '00

We've had both PRIMESTAR and DirecTV services: The first service, PRIMESTAR, we had no problems with. In fact, we liked it very much. We got great service with PRIMESTAR, great programming, highly adequate equipment, and even two PRIMESTAR guides every month that arrived on schedule. At the time we thought the monthly fees were a little much but didn't know what we would flounder into when DirecTV came campaigning along. All the sudden we were barraged with sales pitches on how much better DirecTV was than PRIMESTAR. Well, we didn't want to be left behind so we went ahead and upgraded to DirecTV's satellite service. We were told that not only would we get the same channels and better prices than we had before, we'd get "much, much more." So we believed them. Wrong! It turned out we were lacking at least a half dozen channels that we liked very much. We knew it instantly just within minutes after it was installed even before the DirecTV fellow was gone. We asked him about it and he said you'll have to call the main office and that they screwed it up. We were also told that it would be only $19.99 to upgrade since we were in the process of moving. It ended up costing just for the installation of the upgrade almost $100.00. We called the main office and found out that we now had to pay about $20.00 more a month for fewer channels than we had before. And that to get those same channels we'd have to get the premium service which is about $100.00 a month as compared to the less than $45.00 a month we were used to paying. We told them we didn't want premium service we just wanted what we had with PRIMESTAR back. "It's too late for that," they said, "PRIMESTAR no longer exists." Another words, you fell for the pitch and your stuck with it or loose everything you invested into it. "It's your choice." We also found out later that we sustained property damages to our house during the installation: the DirecTV fellow had tore the insulation out of, and collapsed, an air-condition and heat duct pipe which still, after six months, hasn't been repaired properly nor compensated for. He cussed the whole time he was installing it, and loud enough that the whole family could hear it; he complained about how bad his job was; he complained about the "idiots in the office who misinformed us on the charges" and that he was "letting us off cheap." We've called DirecTV many times since and to no avail we finally gave up. They are too immature and arrogant to deal with. Their response is "get something else if you don't like it, but your not getting PRIMESTAR back nor a refund." DirecTV . . . What a MISTAKE!
