I want my DVD!
Mar 24 '00
My brother is the one in the family who is usually just on the cutting edge. He has always been the first to get this or that electronic gadget. (He actually just got n High Definition TV too) I, on the other hand, have usually waited unit the product has become mainstream. This was more a result of my desire for the new toy was less, than the hole that it would leave in my pocket. Usually, the newer the technology the higher the cost. Does anyone remember when VCRs and CD players where thousands of dollars. Today, each can be had for less than 100 bucks.
Last year my brother somehow got his hands on two DVD (Digital Video Discs or Digital Versatile Discs) players and offered one to me at a discount. Now, I really hadn’t considered buying a DVD player up until that point, but I said, "What the Heck". He started telling me how great they were, but I already owned a VCR and had cable…... Why would I need a DVD player too?
Advantages of DVD over VHS
Better Picture Quality - For starters the quality of the picture is amazing. Some people will say this DVD player or that DVD player has a great picture, but really they all have a far superior picture than what most people are used to. VHS has static and can skip and jump around sometimes. The DVD is crystal clear all the time.
Better Sound Quality - If you have a either a Dolby Digital or Digital Theatre Sound (DTS) compatible components, you will truly experience a virtual Theatre sound presentation. Even if your TV isn’t, you will still get the some of the virtual 3D sound characteristics.
More Viewing Options - You want options, DVD has options. First, you can change the aspect ratio of most movies. If you want to view it as it is seen in a Theatre, no problem. The top and bottom of the screens will be blacked out and you will see the object on the periphery that you would normally miss if you were watching on a standard VCR.
Most movies come with a subtitle option to read the movie as you are watching it. I used this feature while I was watching the battle scenes in "Saving Private Ryan" . I now know everything they were saying that I couldn’t here over the gun fire. Or if you want it in a different language, no problem, a different language track is included too.
More capacity - Because the DVD are just like a CD ROM, they can hold a lot more information. This allow the Studios to put other things on you movie. You can see the trailer to the movie, Shorts about the making of the movie or about the special effects.
Other Features - This also allows for an on screen index that will enable you to jump to any scene in the movie instantly. You don’t have to fast forward or rewind. But lets say you want to use a fast forward feature. You can adjust the speed. Do you want to go a 2, 4 8 16 or 32 times normal speed.
Do you want to zoom into a scene or go in crystal clear slow motion. Those options are a snap too.
There are so many features that I can’t cover them all, but in the future, many movies will let you select which camera angle you want to watch the movie from. (Now that’s cool)
Plus you can always see exactly how much time is left in the movie with a touch of the button.
Easier to Store - Since DVD movies are so much smaller, they will take up a lot less room in your video library enabling you to have many more movies. Also they can be tucked away in a cabinet instead of on a rack in the middle of you room
Will Last Longer - The should also last a lot longer too. Because the discs have the images and audio burned into them, they can’t easily be scratched. The discs are much more durable the that of VHS tape too. (As noted from a comment from Dave, Fingerprints and Dirt cause a problem with DVD operations...thanks Dave).
Conclusion: DVD prices are currently plummeting. Don’t be the last one on your block without one.
