| ksinn's Full Review: Pioneer CDX-FM1257 Car CD Changer |
I was considering an in-dash CD player for my 1998 F150, but I didn't want to take out the stock radio because it's a double-DIN size. So I opted for the CD changer, and I'm glad I did!
The changer came securely packaged (I ordered online) with all but a few of the items required to install it (more on that later). Instructions were very clear and thorough. I installed this unit myself in about 3 hours, and that included removing the radio to hook-up the power supply and removing a back seat! Like I said, all items for installation are included with the exception of "t-taps" - small devices designed to tap into an existing wire to allow easy connection of another wire. Highly recommended, and only about $0.25 each (I used 2).
Once installed, I chose a free FM frequency on my radio, set the changer to operate on it and that was it! The sound quality is very good, and it's very easy to operate. This unit will read CD-R's, and will recognize CD-TEXT, so the display will show you what disc and song you are listening to. You can also program the names of CD's in yourself if they don't support CD-TEXT. You can also program the changer to play only your favorite songs on any given CD. The unit has memory for 100 CD titles, will remember up to 24 favorite titles each for 100 CD's.
In addition to the dash mounted remote/display, a separate I/R remote control is included (very handy).
As for skipping - it is non-existent. I drive a pickup, which does not exactly have a smooth, car-like ride. After I installed the changer, I went out on some rough roads, crossed railroad tracks, and generally tried to make this thing skip. I couldn't do it then, and it has not skipped on me to date. Very impressive.
My only real complaint would be that the display is not bright enough. When angled away from direct view, or in direct sunlight, it can be very hard to read. Other than that it's adequate.
I highly recommend this unit if you want to add CD capability to your existing FM system. It's fantastic!
