I Wouldn't Even Put A Sony In My Doghouse!

Dec 08 '00 (Updated Jan 03 '01)

For the last few years, I've avoided ALL Sony products like the plague. Imparticular, their audio products.

Every Sony product that I have ever owned either broke, or was missing a part or connecting wires were frayed. Some of their home audio, (Receivers, CD players etc...) and smaller personal items, were repackaged, most likely sent out as defective at one point. Through pain and suffering I've learned my lesson.

If you are looking to purchase a home entertainment center on a fixed budget, look into Kenwood products, or Technics, both reasonably priced, and much better quality. They have everything the Sony you were looking at has, plus there's no defect guarantee.

When I worked for the nation's #1 electronics retailer. 60% of all my returns were Sony Audio products. During special events throughout the store, company representatives stood by their products assisting the sales counselors by promoting and educating consumers on their products. I’ve never seen a Sony rep show his or her face at any event. (I would be ashamed too.) The reps would always take the grills off of the receivers and all of the (home audio) representatives would compare theirs to the closest priced Sony because of its popularity.

Inside, you see glue smeared all over the components, I’ve even seen fingerprints! Digital chips and or tubes are often crooked, wires used are very thin, and a fire hazard, especially if you buy the wrong pair of speakers. (Most Sony receivers WILL NOT handle 4ohm speakers (such as Bose) you can easily overload such a poorly assembled receiver, even though you just paid $400 for the name. More expensive Sony models are just bigger, more expensive pieces of garbage!

We demonstrated a Sony STR model receiver using a pair of Cerwin Vega 4ohm speakers. The customer was interested in the speakers, but owned a comparable Sony receiver. After running less than 12 minutes, we could smell smoke, then we saw it stream up from the back end like steam from a hot tub on a cold day. Needless to say, he walked away with smaller 8ohms. He wanted the better bass response, but simply put, his amp couldn’t handle it.

Customers often complain about why it takes so long to receive a defective product back from Sony. The answer…I don’t know. I've always had a difficult time with the service from them as well. They obviously don't know what customer service is all about. I sent in a remote control one time not to get it back from Sony over 4 months later! No one needs this headache especially with so many comparable products out there, like Kenwood, & Technics

Personally, when it comes to a large purchase such as home theater equipment. I want to buy from a company that specifically makes (Home Audio Products) I don't want to buy stereo components from a company that also makes phones, tv's, cd's & childrens toys. I want the assurance that the company I buy from is known for their expertise in home theater/audio. It's a lot of money to spend. Why waste it?

Watch out for high wattage, low AMPERAGE receivers. Lots of buttons and pretty lights, fun @ a party perhaps, but detract from your sound quality, leave that for your kids, and get yourself a Harmon Kardon!!!
