| coyote135's Full Review: Sprint Mobile Phone Service in Kansas City |
After dealing with the very disappointing quality of service from Southwestern Bell Wireless for over a year I decided a change was necessary. The wireless market in Kansas City gives you a few choices, including Sprint PCS, Southwestern Bell, Nextel, Verizon, and Voicestream. With so many carriers there is some healthy competition (i.e. chances of getting better rates). I use my wireless phone on a daily basis and needed a carrier that included a fair number (at least 400 anytime) of daytime minutes and all the minutes must include long distance. Most of the companies have specials such as 1700 minutes for $35 dollars. But when you look closely at the fine print, only 200 of those minutes are peak (M-F 8a-8p). The remaining 1500 can only be used on the weekend. Sprint PCS was the only one I could find that offered the off-peak minutes all weekend as well as at night.
Shopping on the internet is the way to go for me. Sprint had a special on their website at the time offering 500 anytime and 500 night/weekend minutes, as well as the wireless web (for six months) all for $50 a month. I jumped on the offer and I had my phone (Motorola Timeport 8167) in around three days.
Sprint PCS service is far more superior in Kansas City than that offered by SWBell. The sound quality is much better, and at times almost on par with that of home telephone. Since the world headquarters for Sprint is right in the metro KC area I am not surprised that they have alot of towers. As a matter of fact I have even had service in remote areas north of the river in northern Platte and Clay counties where the Sprint map says they don't have service.
Speaking of area service, the beauty of Sprint is the ability to roam in any large city without extra charges. I have taken my phone with me on trips and when I step off the plane my phone is ready to go and makes and receives calls just like I was back in Kansas City.
Minutes and OVERUSE of them is a big concern for many people. The timers on many phones go by the second, even though most all carriers bill by the minute (i.e. a 20 second call will show up as a 1 minute call). To help alleviate fears of going over on your minutes Sprint allows to to log on the internet and see exactly how many minutes you have used. This can also be done over the phone (I haven't figured out how to do that yet).
If you need to talk to customer service DO NOT call from a regular phone. The delay can be very long (up to 30 minutes). Use your Sprint phone (no minutes are charged against you for calling it) and they expedite the call through, usually allowing you to talk with customer service in a minute or two. Most questions or changes I wanted to make in service can be done over the internet. The last time I had to call and speak with an operator was to upgrade my plan. They had a special where you would get 500 peak and 1500 night/weekend minutes all with long distance for $50. They upgraded my plan and now I get 2000 minutes for $50.
Sprint is a great service if you live in and urban area and/or travel to large cities. I would not recommend getting it if you live in a rural area as Sprint service is mainly based in large cities, and the roaming charges would make the phone service cost prohibitive.
