I purchased this unit about a month ago now. I can't say anything of the long term issues at this point, just what I have felt about it so far. This unit is very powerful. I don't have any special system in my 1992 Ford Probe LX. Factory speakers and what not. It does have a built in amp because of the "premium" sound system, but it is nothing to write home about. However, the Xplode's 50 watts per 4 channels make everything sound crappy...in a good way. I now want to upgrade speakers to handle all the power this little unit can push out.
It has a great two color (blue/red) display that is easy to read in all but the most direct sunlight. The volume knob is the type that is continuos spin, so there is no max and min, it is just a digital/analog marriage if you will. It basically clicks with each part of the turn. I enjoy this feature.
I also like that fact that the unit has 18 FM presets ( 6 buttons ) and 6 AM. More than anyone could ever need basically. Plus, located conveniently next to the volume control is preset up/down. Another cooler feature of the tuner is that you can give each station an 8 digit alpha-numeric name "95 Nerve" for instance. This just looks cool.
The Xplode can also read CDText. Newer CD's will have text descriptions for the track names and disc. However, I don't have any of these CD's so I don't know how well this works. I just think it is good Sony is looking ahead in that regard.
One feature I really wish the Xplode had however is a MUTE button. That is a great feature when the phone rings (not that you should drive and talk) or you pull up to a toll booth.
Overall I have been very pleased with the Xplode. It was worth the $170 I paid for it at Sears. Any other long term issues will probably be written in a different review.
