I've always loathed portable phones. Be they cellular, PCS, analog, digital, whatever, I don't like 'em. But I had to get one, we had just moved apartments in Manhattan and weren't getting a land line for weeks.
I picked the QCP-1960 almost as much for appearance as features, just because I'm as much a design geek as i am a tech geek. It turned out to be a good enough choice to change my mind about portable phones in general.
The basic features are good, the sound quality is good. The plans that were available in New York City are pretty economical. There are also a whole bunch of random add-ons, most of which I find unnecessary, but there's no harm in virtually free extras, I guess.
The only downsides? It's a single-band phone. That means you have no coverage in areas where there's no digital service. And I don't like the ringers, there are 7 or 8 choices, of which precisely one is tolerable, and the rest are annoying. And, having the thing in my back pocket led me to sitting on it, which resulted in intermittent failure of the 1, 4, and 7 keys. But I don't suppose there's that many phones that can tolerate the butt crush...
On the upside, there's a pretty large local calling area, free long-distance, and a working, if useless, web browser built-in. The battery time is adequate for me, but I'm not exactly jawing away for hours at a time, and I tend to plug it in whenever I'm home. There's voice mail which you can access with one button push, and billing and minutes used can be accessed through the phone or through the serviceable website at http://www.sprintpcs.com
I haven't had a chance to try plugging my PC into it for web access, but judging by the clarity of the voice calls, i'm guessing it would connect at decent, if not quite blistering, speeds.
For the price, depending on the plan, it's a compelling buy.
