At $1000, you might not consider this a "budget priced" item, but I would not ask you to compare this against other $1000 systems. Compare this system with systems that cost more, a lot more.
What do you get for $1000? A complete audio system: an AM/FM tuner for radio stations, a cassette deck for recording and playing back, a 3 disk CD changer and a pair of Mission 731 speakers. While I do not recommend this combination for large rooms, it may surprise you as to what it is capable of doing in a large room. This is perfect for a bedroom, office, workshop etc.
If you purchase this system and decide you would like to upgrade the system at a later date, let me say that the last item that you will want to update would be the speakers. The Mission 731 have been considered a "best buy" in the esoteric audio community for a number of years. The Denon electronics, while not having the same reputation are a good value in this price range. What makes this system a "good buy" is the completeness of this system; all the typical audio sources.
If you purchase this system and wonder why I'm so impressed with this system, you probably do not have the equipment set up correctly. If your system looks like the picture of this equipment (displayed above), you have not heard what this equipment is capable of.
If you are interested in improving the performance of this system, purchase some really good, sturdy speaker stands that are at least 36" high. Position the speakers at least 3' away from any walls or large flat surfaces. Also the purchase of good speaker wires, such as the Tara Labs inexpensive versions would also be recommended. If this is all done correctly, you will think that you are listening to a live performance of the music that you are playing.
High-end audio system for $1000 - congratulations Denon/Mission.
