Cable or Satellite

Aug 27 '00

We had digital cable with high speed internet access, and even digital phone. That was awesome! Cox is on top of it! If you are lucky to have them, then you are VERY lucky. They offer anything from the basic local channels, a nominal $7 a month to the max $50+... and this out performs my Directv anyday.

Well, we moved and now we have Directv. I guess it would depend on where you live as to what you can get, but, I do like the quality of Directv, so far. I do not like the fact that you have to have more than one receiver.... (they do allow you to have remote controls for rooms where you would like access, without buying a new unit... (they do cost $5 more per unit per month on your bill.... and at least $60 a unit to buy (which is much cheaper than a year ago, when they were $200+....if you have a dual LNB satellite dish. (I would advise this for any house needing more than one room coverage! If you do not, then you have to buy another dish or split the signal. On the internet there are many places to get inexpensive introductory units and free installation. Blockbuster is offering 1 free rental a month for a year, if you activate through one of their stores...too... so, look around.

There is an alternative to a new unit for each room. It is a remote access unit. The remote access unit (costs about $70, but saves you the $5 a month surcharge for an extra unit) actually uses an already installed unit but, it allows access to another room's T.V. and the ability to change channels without having to go to the other room. This is good if you go to bed and no one is using the other unit, however, if someone is using the unit.... you better like the same show in both rooms.

The quality of Directv is comparable to the digital cable, but requires one to have your unit continually hooked up to the phone, which is due to government regulations..... I don't like that part.

However, that said... the sports packages are a sportsperson's heaven on earth.... while, the non-sportsperson's nightmare.... not good for familial communications.

I am glad we chose satellite, but, really we had no quality choice, as we have moved and live in a "antiquated" cable area. The billing system is very understandable and the customer service very helpful, and professional.
