My Nokia 3210 Experience

Oct 16 '00

In May of this year I decided to join the latest fashion trend i.e. owning a mobile phone. I judged all the companies, models, cost and features on the different models. I eventually came to the Nokia 3210. At the time it was about $150 now it is about $100. (Prices are US Dollars but I converted them from Irish Punts - so prices may differ in the US). So the cost was about right.

Then to the features not really knowing too much about mobile phones at the time I read the caption underneath the article in the brochure it said "The Nokia 3210 is light weighing 226 grams, it has predictive text input (this means when you are sending an SMS text message words in the dictionary come up without having to keep pressing the buttons. For example just say you wanted to say "the" normaly you would have to press 8 once,4 twice and 3 twice with predictive text you just type 8,4,3 and it predictics you want to say "the")you can send and receive ringtones, operator logos and the phone has no aerial on the outside as it is built in to the phone.

I will go through each of the 9 categories on the phone:

1. Phone Book;
You can add your friends phone numbers to the phones database and if your friend rings it appears with your friends name. You can assign different ring tones for different people in your phone book so say you want to know if your mother is ringing you, a different ring tone can be assigned for her then the other numbers in your phone book. You can have speed dials for example you can put your house on speed dial, all you have to do is type 1 on your telephone keypad and press call and it automatically rings your house.

2. Messages:
This is just the basic sending and receiving text messages. 12 messages can be stored in your inbox and messages can also be stored in your outbox. But note if you are storing messages in your outbox it is taking up space in your inbox.

3. Call register:
This has the numbers of your missed calls, dialled calls and received calls. It shows how long your last call was and your total call duration since your purchase of the phone. Also by using your PIN 2 number you can enter your prepaid credit and through this it can show you how much your last call cost.

4. Settings:
In this category you can turn off your own number sending so people with caller id will se your number appear as private. You can put on automatic redial and speed dialing. You can select your language, welcome note and you can turn off pin number request on the switching on of the phone. Also you can introduce fixed dialing. For example if you were going away and you were leaving your phone with someone you can enter your PIN 2 number and make so only local calls can be made.

5. Call Divert:
In this category you can set your preference in each of the following: divert all calls without ringing, cancel all diverts, divert when phone off or no coverage, divert when not answered and divert when busy.

6. Games:
When you have this category on your Nokia 3210 you can never be bored with Rotation, Memory and the famous Snake. This is one of the many fun elements to the phone.

7. Calculator:
Extremely handy when shopping or even in class. To do a quick calculation. You can even use it to do currency conversions.

8. Clock:
You can set the time (which you can get to appear on the main screen),date and you can set the alarm at a certain time to wake you up etc.

9. Tones:
In tones you can get your phone to ring normally, ascend (get louder), ring once, beep once or turn off ringing altogether. You can turn warning and game tones on or off. You can get your keypad tones louder (3 levels) or turn them off. You can select you message alert tone. You can select your ringing volume (5 levels). You can compose your own tone. And you can select from 38 ringer tones, one you made yourself or a received tone.

Also through the off switch (on the top of the phone) you can switch off the phone, leave your personal tones on, make the phone go silent i.e. turn off all tones, make it discreet i.e. puts all tones on level 1 and finally make all your tones as loud as possible.

The phone is a very nifty phone as new covers can be bought for it back and front covers. Flick down covers can also be bought for a reasonable price.

Overall: An exciting fun phone. Though poor reception can be found in some areas due to the aerial been built in to the phone.
