My husband and I started out in 1983 with an 8ft. dish. We loved the quality of the pictures and the cost was less than cable for more programming. That was what started us out "hooked" on Satellite Systems.We had almost no trouble with the large dish...but eventually the receiver burned out and it cost almost $600.00 for a new one.
About two more years (we had this system for 13 years) and that receiver burned out. When we tried to get a new one this time, they no longer made one that was compatible with the old dish. We discussed buying another large system, but started looking at some of the smaller ones. The price was what caused us to chose a small dish.
Once we had decided that was the direction we were going to go, I started comparing programming costs between all of the small dishes. Echostar was the most reasonable. So we purchased it in 1997. The system is easy to use, the picture quality is excellent (except when it rains hard) and the programming is reasonable.
But, our receiver wasn't even a year old, the first time, when it quit working. The picture would keep blacking out, sometimes 20 times during a movie. Finally it blacked out totally. Dish Network (Echostar) had us send the receiver to them and then they shipped us a refurbished one.
We should have received a new one since that was still under warranty. We were without TV for about 18 days the first time. This refurbished receiver lasted about 6 months, and started doing the same thing. They replaced that one with another refurbished receiver which lasted about 3 months. By this time we are very upset. So, this time they sent us a new one...but, it is only about 4 months old and has started doing the same thing. They agree there are problems with the receivers...but it is unusual for someone to have as many defective ones as we have had.
