| veganweb's Full Review: Motorola StarTAC ST7760 CDMA / AMPS Cellular Phone |
I have been fighting getting a cell phone for a long time now. Too expensive, calling plans too confusing and just in general had a bad feeling about them. On the other hand I love gadgets so I kinda wanted one.
Well a deal came up and I just had to go for it. So I am now a proud new owner of a StarTac.
The Startac has several things going for it. It's compact and light, weighing just a few ounces and folds down to about the size of a beeper. The display is large and easy to read and the digital quality is really good. This is a dual mode phone so you can be analog or digital. It also has caller ID and voice mail so you don't have to talk to anyone if you don't want to.
The down side is that if you are on the edge of a digital zone it will suddenly switch to analog and drop you call. I don't know if this is typical of these phones but it can be annoying. The best thing to do it to switch it analog only before you make you call, but you can't do that for incoming calls. The phone also feels pretty flimsy, altho I'm assured that it's tough. I have dropped it a couple times already with no adverse effects.
The main thing I like about this phone is that in an independent test done on cell phones the StarTac exposed the user to the least radiation of the phones that were tested. While there is no concrete proof that radiation will give you brain cancer it's always a good idea to hedge your bets. These phones can be expensive but everyone I know that has one feels that they are worth it.
