Why DVD's are awesome

Jan 14 '00 (Updated Feb 08 '00)

The DVD

DVD’s come with either Dolby Digital, Digital Theatre Sound (DTS), (see Dolby Digital Explained and DTS Explained under "Top > Electronics > Home Audio > DVD Players > DVD in your Home Theater") and/or Lucas’ THX. All of which beat the snot out of Dolby Surround/Dolby Pro-Logic. If you have ever noticed, movie theatres show movies in either Dolby Digital, DTS, Digital Surround, or THX. If you have a DVD player you can play the sound through the three modes mentioned above (assuming you have the correct equipment). And unlike tapes which usually have surround you can get the rear speakers in stereo.

Most DVD offer the widescreen/letterbox/anamorphic feature, which means what you saw in the movie theatre is what you will see on your television screen. Many “normal” VHS tapes have the full screen feature and say something like “this film has been modified to fit your screen,” which sucks.

Many people ask “so what if I lose the sides of my movie?” I would respond like this; what if you had a painting by say Piccasso (sp?) and it did not quite fit on your wall, would you saw off the sides of the painting to make it fit? Then why would you do that with a movie?

If you have ever seen Ghostbusters and looked carefully at the scene where Peter Venkman (Bill Murry) (sp?) walks into the apartment of Sigourney Weaver. In the full screen version there is a lot of funny panning. (the camera moving sideways) This occurs because Bill is on one side of the screen and Sigourney is on the other and the camera moves back and forth to get them both in. I HATED IT!!!!

In widescreen this does not occur. You see what the director wanted you to see and that’s what counts.

DVD’s also have the clearest picture of any mainstream media. In general, most people do not see the full potential of the DVD because their TV does not have an S-Video input (see an article by 1richmond). Or because their TV is just too old.

In conclusion DVD’s rule because the sound is clearer and in better formats, the video is clearer and what the director wanted you to see is there and hell, its even copyable . . . see the DeCSS program . . . but hey that’s the subject of another epinion.
