| potceman's Full Review: MPTrip MP3-CD Player |
After months of acquiring many MP3's from Napster, and converting most of my own CD collection to MP3, I decided it was time to get an MP3 player. There was no way in Heites I was gonna spend $250 for a 32MB flash MP3 player. I noticed the MP Trip and was very impressed by the review on ZDTV (now Techtv). Realizing it was a first generation model, I was prepared for the cheap build quality, and other general quirks. Well, here's my opinion of the MP Trip.
INTERFACE:
Since the model does not read ID3 tags, you are forced to remember the number of your favorite song. I really don't feel this is that big of a deal, because I use the Random play most of the time. The buttons have a cheap feel, and the battery cover is hard to snap in place. Also, when you remove the CD, you must be very careful not to scratch it. For some reason, the cover only opens about half as much as it should. I completely damaged one of my first MP3 CDs by scratching it when I took it out. Just be careful. Other buttons are pretty straight forward. I use the headphone output (with upgraded headphones) for my private listening, and the line level for channeling sound to my home theater system.
SOUND:
I was expecting good sound quality from the reviews I had read, and trust me, I was/am not disappointed. Most of my MP3's are encoded at 128kbps, and upon comparing to the same music on CD, I was simply blown away. I realize that you can get a portable audio CD player for as little as $30 at your local electronics store, but a portable MP3/CD player for less than $100?? You must be kidding me! I love technology.
After using the unit for more than a month now, I am still in awe. The 5 preset equalizer is pretty much a joke. The only one I use is #5. I do, however, wish there was a way to turn the ESP off. I use NiMH rechargeable batteries, and the most playback I normally get is around 2 hours. Maybe they should have used 4 AA's instead of just 2? Yet another first gen quirk.
OVERALL:
Overall I am very impressed with this unit. Note that there are some new challengers on the market, namely the Memorex 8505. I recently bought my brother one for his birthday, for $89.99 (on sale, at Target). It came with a car kit and everything! I'll post some reviews when we test it out some. In the meantime, if you want a MP3/CD player now, get the MPTrip. I used Easybuy2000 and was totally satisfied.
