| pfleeg's Full Review: Canon ES290 8mm Analog Camcorder |
After reading reviews, searching the web, and cost-comparing for weeks, I decided on the Canon ES-290 camcorder. I was a newcomer to camcorder technology and usually don't make an investment/purchase of this type without having conducted some hard-core research. After reviewing various formats, I decided on 8mm because:
1. It's a notch above VHS-C
2. The improvements you get with Hi8 are negligible vs the cost you incur
3. I think digital technology will continue to mature and become affordable at some point in the future
My main reasons for purchasing this product were:
1. It offered capabilities that other 8mm brands did not have
2. Canon's reputation for quality optics
3. Price was very competitive with similar brands/formats
After using this unit for just a couple of days, I have to say it's extremely easy to use. I usually dispense with the owners manual and judge ease of use right out of the box. The ES290 was a snap to figure out. The few times I did refer to the user's manual, it was easy to read and contained clear instructions and diagrams. The mike picks up voices and sounds with amazing clarity and the zoom is easy to use. The image stabilization works very well. When played back on my TV the pictures were steady even when I was just goofing around.
