The PV-V4660 is worth every penny and then some. The commercial advance feature makes it worth buying even if you don't need a new VCR.
We have had ours for 6 months and have had no trouble with it. The commercial advance feature is not 100% perfect but it works most of the time. When first testing it, I taped 6 hours of programming. I watched the entire tape in 3 hours and 20 minutes! Then I rented 5 movies. The movie advance feature worked perfectly on every one of them.
We replaced a 2-year-old Toshiba that no one could keep running. It broke down every 10 weeks on the dot. The service warranty was still in effect because the original problem had never been fixed, but we got tired of the hassle and decided to replace it. If we had known how great the Panasonic is, we wouldn't have bought the Toshiba in the first place but we'd had bad luck with Panasonic products in the 1980s and were leery.
When I researched the Panasonic, I noted that some buyers were afraid to use old tapes, fearing the high-speed rewind would break them. I use tapes I bought in 1983 in the machine. No problem. The rewind is VERY fast but it slows down before it reaches the end of the tape and it does not start on the fastest speed.
The remote control is essential. The front of the unit does not have all the controls the remote has so manual adjustment can be difficult. The remote needs to be redesigned with larger buttons. This was a constant complaint when I was doing research. Men hated the remote; large hands and small buttons do not function well together. The other complaint was that the light on the remote is dim. True, but we don't find that to be a problem.
There are more features on this machine than we will ever use. We bought the top-of-the-line for two reasons: commercial advance and superior sound quality. The sound is better than that of our stereo JVC television and far, far better than that of any Sony product.
